Desmond Fitzgerald's Birthday (All Day)
As Boston's City Engineer, Fitzgerald’s work included groundbreaking initiatives, such as the creation of the nation's first water testing laboratory affiliated with a municipal water system. He was twice awarded the coveted Norman Medal from the American Society of Civil Engineers for his accomplishments, an organization he also served as president. He spent more than a decade working out of this building, the Metropolitan Water Works pumping station at the Chestnut Hill Reservoir.
When the Boston Water Works became part of the state water system, Fitzgerald was appointed Engineer of the Sudbury division, where he continued his pioneering efforts to improve water quality and delivery systems. In 1902, Fitzgerald retired from his state post to work as a consulting engineer on a number of challenging and important national and international water projects, including those in New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, San Francisco, and Manila.
