Carl Smith, author of City Water, City Life: Water and the Infrastructure of Ideas in Urbanizing Philadelphia, Boston, and Chicago, will speak about the critical role of the Cochituate Aqueduct in solving Boston's water needs in the 1800s. Smith, Professor of Engish and American Studies at Northwestern University, will also address the symbolism of the aqueduct as a major new component in the city's evolving infrastructure of ideas, beliefs, and values that came to form its identity.
